Masters Practice
Joshua Masters (b. 1998, San Jose, CA) was raised in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA. Joshua graduated with their BFA in studio art at Western Carolina University. They began as a freelance artist in 2015 and continued their career through mural work before transitioning to work as an intern and glassblowing assistant at the Jackson County Green Energy Park. Their works have been shown in The Dark Side at the Boomer Gallery, London, UK, ArtFields at the Jones-Carter Gallery in Lake City, SC, the 14th Biennial International Miniature Print Exhibition 2023 at the Center for Contemporary Printmaking, Norwalk, CT, and Pride Pots: Community Conversations at the Clay Studio, Philadelphia, PA. Joshua’s artistic practice is a channel for activism on behalf of the disabled and queer communities. Their interdisciplinary focus currently involves ceramics, painting, and collage as they aproach contemporary issues in conjunction with historical campaigns and moments to encourage reflection on civil and social rights movements that are being revisited in culture wars today.
Ceramics and Glass
Ceramics and glass are some of the most ancient industries. In exploring identity, I look back to our past through these time honored practices. Retaining a focus on the functionality of vessels, I strive to bring new perspectives to these traditional materials.
Two Dimensional
When painting or drawing, I cannot help but be drawn to depiction of people from all walks of life. Through repetition and multiplicity, I explore shifts in community focusing on the individual among masses as new themes develop.
Installation and Public Art
Sharing my creative practice with a community brings greater meaning and value to my work. Exchange of thoughts, imagery, and experiences are essential as diverse perspectives and criticism allow opportunities for conversation and growth of my public practice.
