Artist Statement
If it qualifies for a tax break, a heart break, or a mental break, it may be a part of my work. As a trans person navigating life with invisible disabilities, my journey has been defined by resilience, empathy, and a commitment to amplify the voices of marginalized groups. I explore diverse perspectives, focusing on contemporary experiences of queer and disabled individuals. I share these experiences to illuminate the richness of our communities and the intersections therein. By portraying narratives of marginalized individuals, I seek to dismantle societal barriers, fostering empathy, understanding, and inclusivity. I aspire to continue making work for museums and galleries with marginalized communities at the core of my practice to engage wider audiences and encourage empathy for these groups.
I use porcelain casts of commonly stigmatized disability aids and related imagery for my canvases to depict individuals who use these devices or similar medical aids to enhance their quality of life, inviting audience members to reconsider their connotations about such devices and the people who depend on them. Using color language from the disability pride flag, and incorporating other historical visual language into current conversations, each work provides a new context to consider its individual parts in.
As I continue my research, this practice is applied to the intersectional communities I work with over a variety of mediums. As part of this dialogue, I explore personal, intimate, and erotic lives lived by these groups in paintings and prints, through photography, and more expansively in installations. Through this portrayal I challenge preconceptions, inviting viewers to appreciate the nuanced beauty of marginalized communities and the importance of embracing such diversity.
Ceramics and Glass
Ceramics and glass are some of the most ancient industries. In exploring identity, I look back to our past through these time honored practices. Retaining a focus on the functionality of vessels, I strive to bring new perspectives to these traditional materials.
Two Dimensional
When painting or drawing, I cannot help but be drawn to depiction of people from all walks of life. Through repetition and multiplicity, I explore shifts in community focusing on the individual among masses as new themes develop.
Installation and Public Art
Sharing my creative practice with a community brings greater meaning and value to my work. Exchange of thoughts, imagery, and experiences are essential as diverse perspectives and criticism allow opportunities for conversation and growth of my public practice.
